Gary Koeppel has spent 35 years looking at light and shadow in the landscape.

He was a recipient of the 2005 Viewers Choice Award for the First Annual Roslindale Open Studios. In 2006, Koeppel was again awarded Viewers Choice, as well as Third Prize in the juried selection.

He holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art. His work as a commercial illustrator informs the unified composition of his landscape paintings. His work has appeared in galleries, museums and art shows throughout New England and New York.

“My locations and inspiration range from around the neighborhood to Cape Cod and points north. In addition to Plein Air painting on location I also work on larger pieces in my studio; this controlled environment allows me the luxury of time to work larger and push the image in a different, compelling direction.”

“The elements that attract me to a scene have to do with composition, color, contrasts of light and dark. When I paint a tree in a field the tree becomes secondary to describing the space around it. What I like best about being in the landscape is, it’s a way to capture the moment- a way to stop time and study it. Through that observation an imprinted memory of the scene remains for me. I paint in oils. “
