8 Tuesdays, 6 pm - 9 pm, starting 4/24

This class focuses on a direct and expressive painting approach commonly known as “Premier Coup”. Artists from John Singer Sergeant to to Van Gogh to Lucian Freud have utilized versions of this approach. This course requires certain fundamental understanding and skills of all elements used to create a great portrait. Each student will use a full spectrum palette of their choice. We will focus on how to quickly capture a likeness and how to manipulate the edges of your brush to create form and space. How value and color can create space while still maintaining the likeness and character of your sitter. You will develop the ability to quickly “feel” your color relationships and learn to navigate saturation, all while trying to accomplish this in one session! This process requires a sustained and focused awareness which can lead to surprising and impressive results. This class is designed for the intermediate to advanced student. How do you capture a likeness? What are the essentials? This course will answer these questions and many more. You will learn foundational concepts and tools to create accurate and life-like portraits. Learn everything you need to know from proper easel placement to how to hold your brush. We will start with monochromatic studies and work with visual exercises which will teach you how to perceive and communicate, the key elements that are essential to grasping the  likeness of an individual. We will continue by progressing through a series of complimentary color exercises that are specifically designed to heighten your awareness of the relational component of color perception and color mixing. A full spectrum primary palette will then be introduced. Direct and indirect painting methods will also be discussed throughout the class. We will work from a live model, in a sketch book, and from photography. This class is designed for the beginner to the intermediate student. Oil or acrylic are preferred.

To be able to capture the likeness and character of a person you’re drawing needs to be not only accurate, but a felt response to the subject. Drawing is the foundation of all representational art and especially portraiture. It is not the media itself that is of such importance, but the visual language its helps to develop. This course will focus on foundational concepts such as: proportions, cast shadows shapes, artistic facial anatomy, negative positive shape, relative measuring, blind contour, and more. We will start will linear drawings and slowly move into using value, where you will develop each step of the process. We will work from photographs and live models. This class is for all levels. Calling all individualists! We all have a collection of items that have caught our eye, but for which we have no real use. Upcycle! Take what appeals to you and make it into earrings/pendant. As we brainstorm ideas and innovation, you'll start to feel comfortable about stepping outside the box on what an earring can be. You'll learn how to build up layers, apply adhesives, choose assemblage options, and achieve wearability. Today's fashionistas applaud creativity and recycling, and in that spirit, we'll explore themes of color, shape, and style each week, while using a wide range of materials including plastic, paper, fabric, and more. You’ll go home with several new pairs of beautiful one of a kind earrings . Please bring a section of small fond items that you'd like to incorporate into your earrings, and all other materials will be provided .

Designed for the advanced beginner/intermediate painter, beginners are welcome, though a class of introduction to painting is strongly suggested and can be made available at an additional charge prior to the start of the main session.
