Ceramics: Introduction to Nerikomi (Cary Rapaport)

This hand-building workshop is an introduction to the technique of nerikomi for porcelain. This unique fusion of color, pattern, and form involves mixing pigments into the wet clay, integrating the color throughout rather than painting it onto the surface.  By layering and compressing different colors of porcelain, we will construct a solid block with a pattern running through the inside.  The designs will be revealed when the block is sliced in a cross section.  With the colored slices we will create ceramic work with unique visual effects.  Learn how to color the clay with mason stains, explore techniques of color blending, patterns, marbling and more!

The workshop meets once a week for three weeks. Materials included.
