Portrait Painting: First Strike (Jeffrey Ellse)

This class focuses on a direct and expressive painting approach commonly known as “Premier Coup”. Artists from John Singer Sergeant to to Van Gogh to Lucian Freud have utilized versions of this approach. This course requires certain fundamental understanding and skills of all elements used to create a great portrait. Each student will use a full spectrum palette of their choice. We will focus on how to quickly capture a likeness and how to manipulate the edges of your brush to create form and space. How value and color can create space while still maintaining the likeness and character of your sitter. You will develop the ability to quickly “feel” your color relationships and learn to navigate saturation, all while trying to accomplish this in one session! This process requires a sustained and focused awareness which can lead to surprising and impressive results. This class is designed for the intermediate to advanced student.
